Actos (pioglitazone) is an oral medication used to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and is the 14th most sold medication in the United States. On June 15, 2011, the FDA issued a safety announcement stating that use of Actos® for over a year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer.
As of June 10, 2011 Germany and France have both halted the sale of Actos after a 4 year study yielded a 22% increased risk of bladder cancer. The French Medicines Agency ordered French doctors not to prescribe Actos and anyone currently taking Actos should consult with his/her doctor immediately. Germany has recommended not to start Actos in new patients.
